The deputy spokesperson of the Gambia Armed Forces, captain Malick Sanyang has confirmed a shooting incident in Sare-Omar village involving Senegalese forestry officers who crossed the border on motorcycles.

“It was yesterday [Sunday] about 11 am when three armed men reported being Senegalese forestry officers riding on motorcycles arrived at Sare-Omar and had a confrontation with some young people there. During that confrontation, the Senegalese shot one Omar Njie in the left leg using a local gun,” Captain Sanyang explained. He further revealed that the victim was evacuated to Japineh Health Centre and later referred to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul for further treatment. “Further investigation continues into the matter,” Captain Sanyang explained.

The deputy Army spokesman said Gambian soldiers stationed in Pakaliba visited the scene and the situation is calm and normal at the moment.

There was pandemonium at Sare Omar village in the Jarra Central of the Lower River Region, as Senegalese Forestry Officers are reported to have opened fire on Gambians wounding one and confiscating properties; nine horse carts and two motorbikes, The Point has been reliably informed.

The incident was reported to have occurred in the early hours of Monday morning. The victim, identified as one Omar Njie, a Senegalese national is currently hospitalised at the Jarra Soma District Hospital receiving medical attention from life threatening wound.

Personnel of The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) including the police and other security operatives in the region have been deployed to Sare Omar, a border village between The Gambia and Senegal.

An anonymous confirmed the development to The Point.

Our source added: “The victim, (Omar Njie) who is believed to be a timber smuggler, was pursued by the Senegalese forestry officers within the Senegal territory. He ran into The Gambian territory where he reportedly met with potential timber buyers, (Gambians) waiting for him to buy timbers.”

“The Senegalese forestry officers after arriving in The Gambian territory open fire, wounding Mr. Njie in his knee. They later confiscated nine horse carts, two motorbikes, with one from Gambia and the other from Senegal.”

Our source further added that inhabitants of the area have called on the government to help address the frequent problem within the area. They have also urged the government to demarcate the border between Sare Omar in Gambia and its neighbouring Senegalese villages.

It could be recalled that last year, Senegalese soldiers reported entered Gambian territory while on patrol. A video of them went viral showing Senegalese troops clashing with Gambian civilians at the border village of Sare Omar village, an act that sparked outrage among members of the public.

The man shot in Sare-Omar village in the LRR by Senegalese forestry officers is not a Gambian, security sources told The Standard yesterday. The community is inside The Gambia but surrounded by villages, part of which are located both in Senegal and The Gambia.

According to our sources, a violent confrontation erupted between timber smugglers and suspected Senegalese forestry officers on March 15 in Sare-Omar, a border village in Jarra and Sinchu Kodeh, a village divided between Gambia and Senegal.

As a result, our source confirmed that one Omar Njie, a Senegalese from nearby Sare Ardo in the Casamance, was shot and sustained a gunshot wound on his leg. The victim was rushed to Jalambere village health centre then to Soma hospital for treatment.

Our source added that the suspected Senegalese forestry officers are also alleged to have seized 9 horses and carts.

According to our security source, the villagers and timber smugglers in the area have urged the Gambia Government to caution the Senegalese security against intrusion to avoid possible consequences.

When contacted for comments, the Government spokesperson Ebrima Sankareh confirmed the latest development and called for calm to allow the relevant authorities to do their work.
