1. Breaking News: Banjul/Barra Sea Disaster Claims 8 Lives
Kibaaro News has been informed about a fatal boat disaster in Gambian waters, claiming at least eight lives.
The latest incident occurred between Banjul and Barra on Friday evening. The incident will undoubtedly cause scare among thousands of passengers that ply between Banjul and Barra. Thousands of people are on the verge of crossing to attend the Eid-ul-Adha prayers in other parts of the country, particularly Baddibou and Niumi.
All the eight passengers on board the boat have died. The captain was the sole survivor, our sources confirmed. One of the disaster victims, Bora Kijera, hailed from Brikama Misira. He is believed to be an old man.
Rescue mission has already started. A resident of Barra confirmed that two dead bodies have been found.
Kibaaro News is still putting together the story, trying hard to obtain further details. This proves hard, considering the fact that the story broke out when it was already dark in Banjul.
The fatal news came on the heels of many reported complaints about the dwindling state of Banjul/Barra ferries. The ferries have become centre of public focus, with some online commentators describing them as “ticking time bomb” waiting to explode.
The ferries have developed severe mechanical problems that made them almost useless. Due to their mechanical problems, the ferries cover the seven mile journey between 4 and 7 hours. Banjul/Barra ferry ride used to last 30 minutes. In several cases, the ferries lost their way.
United Kingdom had earlier issued a travel advice advising its citizens against using the Gambia’s ferry services.

Fishing boat accident claims 7 lives

A fishing boat carrying passengers from Banjul to Barra recently capsized as it approached Barra claiming seven lives.
The captain and seven passengers on board the boat were all travelling without life jackets. The captain, who is the sole survivor of the accident, managed to escape by swimming, but it took him almost two hours before finding his way out of the water.
Confirming the accident to the Daily Observer in an interview at the weekend, Police public relations officer, ASP David Kujabi, explained that the accident occurred on Wednesday the 9th of October 2013 between the hours of 9 and 10pm.
He said one Alagie Mbenge, a fishing boat owner who is a Banjulian residing in Barra, received a phone call from his in-law Seedy Jahateh, who asked him (Alagie Mbenge) to come to Banjul and take him across to Barra.
ASP Kujabi further explained that when Alagie arrived in Banjul, he met his in-law with six others who all wanted to cross. He said the captain (Alagie) complained to his in-law but the latter insisted that the other passengers were his friends.
The police PRO further stated that when the boat got near Barra, a strong wind started and the boat, eventually capsized, resulting to all seven passengers drowning. He said that some of the bodies have already been recovered.
PRO Kujabi urged the public to always wear life jackets when crossing the river small fishing boats.

Boat Capsizes Drowning All 8 Passengers
A fishing boat carrying eight passengers from Banjul to Barra on Wednesday night; October 9th in the North Bank of the Gambia capsized at sea, drowning all the passengers. The captain of the Boat was said to have swum to shore to inform others that his boat has capsized. By Friday morning, two dead bodies were found by the Gambia police and Navy and other searchers. According to the Police PRO, the boat’s Captain whose name he did not disclose at the time, said he was on the North Bank of the Sea when his in-law called him to come and help him to cross at a time when the normal ferry services had closed. He said, this is what compelled him to take a boat to help, but found out that seven other passengers wanted to cross to the North Bank; that it was on that journey that the Boat capsized and he has not seen any of them. He swam across to the Banjul terminal, explained PRO Kujabi.
The boat captain was said to have been arrested by the police. The Police Public Relations Officer Mr. David Kujabi, confirmed the story to Foroyaa’s Mariama Ceesay. He said the police are relentless in their efforts to enforce the law, but many people are ready to take the risk to cross by locally built boats. He said the security is making frantic efforts to search for the rest of the passengers believed to have died in the accident. Kujabi said the Boat Captain has been arrested and is helping the police in their investigations.A nurse at the Country’s main referral hospital in Banjul said two corpses have so far arrived there and are waiting for postmortem.
However, before going to Press on Sunday October 13; it is learnt that the other six bodies were also found and taken to the EFST Hospital in Banjul for post mortem.The Gambia ferry services have reportedly suffered continuous breakdowns since last year which is said to have compelled the authorities to shorten the duration of operation and this conditions many passengers to join the small Boats to cross from Banjul to Barra in the North Bank which is quite a distance of water.

Boat Captain Accused of Rash and Negligent Act Causing Death, Remanded

Alagie Mbenga, a captain of a fishing boat which capsized on the 9th of October 2013 between Banjul and Barra in the river Gambia causing the death of eight people was yesterday 23rd of this month arraigned before Magistrate Lamin Mbaye of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court charged with two counts of Rash and Negligent Act causing death contrary to the laws of the Gambia and Conveying Persons by water for hire in unsafe or overloaded vessel contrary to section 225 of the Criminal Code, laws of The Gambia. According to the particulars of offence, the aforesaid person, on or about the 9th day of October 2013 between Banjul and Barra in the River Gambia, in a rash and negligent manner caused the death of Bora Kejera, Lamin Conteh, Yusupha Fofana, Momodou Jallow, Cherno Ceesay, Ebrima Jeng, Sheikh Faal and Seedy Jahateh by unlawfully and unsafely carrying them on board a fishing canoe as passengers across the River Gambia from Banjul to Barra which capsized, thereby committed an offence.
Count two Particulars of offence states that, the accused on the 9th of October, 2013 between Banjul and Barra in the River Gambia, the republic of the Gambia, knowingly and negligently carried the following persons with an unsafe fishing canoe as passengers across the River Gambia namely, Bora Kejera, Lamin Conteh, Yusupha Fofana, Momodou Jallow, Cherno Ceesay, Ebrima Jeng, Sheikh Faal and Seedy Jahateh, which capsized and caused their death, thereby committed an offence.
After reading the charged sheet to the accused person, he said “I accept what you said but it was my in-law who put them in the boat and I have refused to put them on the boat. It was not me, it was my in-law who put them in the boat.” The court entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of the accused person. Cadet Inspector Mbemba Fadera applied for an adjournment on grounds that the case file is at the Attorney General Chambers. The application for adjournment was granted by the court.
However, the trial Magistrate ruled that the accused be remanded at Mile II Central Prison pending the prosecution access to the case file. The case is adjourned to 5th of November, 2013 for hearing.
