I wonder if the perception of the disabled has changed at all in the administrations thinking and in public perception of this group of Gambian society.
"Survived by neither a wife nor a child, Pa Lamin Darboe, who was physically challenged - handicapped by leprosy – was interred at Old Jeshwang Cemetery.
He had been under detention since his arrest in January 2011, as he had been alleged to have been in possession of 10 kilograms of an illicit drug, cannabis.
But 63-year-old pleaded not guilty to the drug charges levied against him at the magistrates’ court in Kanifing where he was undergoing trial"

INTERVIEW WITH FATOU JOBE

Mustapha: Can you please introduce yourself to our readers?
Fatou Jobe: my name is Fatou Jobe, a disable business woman
Mustpaha: What do you do for a living?
Fatou Jobe: like hour you found me doing. I sell and also engage in begging because that’s what I do until I have the chance to make a table to sell goods. Some people are good, they used to see me sitting and they provided me something, those are the one’s that fear God because they make me to survive from all these type of things.
Mustapha: How did you acquire your skills? Fatou Jobe: The skill that I have is selling small things that I have from the pious people, people who are merciful and understanding.
Mustapha: What obstacle do you face and how do you overcome them?
Fatou Jobe: there are no obstacles, why I said so is because the problem that should disturb me until you know that I will feel it in my heart is not many, because I am sitting and doing my business and I have no problem, I have not gone anywhere to beg. I thank God a lot that now at least I have a business of my own and will not go out and be begging on the street.
Mustapha: What challenges do you faced now?
Fatou Jobe: The problem that am having now is lack of residence. I have a compound but there is no strength to build it. The problem of house rent is a major challenge. If there is any confusion between the families even if you are the one who has problem you have to leave the house because it’s not your father’s compound. Before it will be nice you have your own compound.
Mustapha: Are you a member of any Disable People’s Organisation (DPO)?
Fatou Jobe; Right now am not in any kind of group, before I was but am not in it because they will come and tell you all kinds of things and later you will not see anything. Before, the groups were together like a family any of them that have problem they will join together and help the person who is in need.
Mustapha: How is business?
Fatou Jobe: Thank God, my business is doing well people come and buy the little that I have and i use it to feed the family and other household materials and even pay rent, keep some to buy other goods to add to my business. Some people will come and give me five dalasis, others ten dalasis. I also take those gifts and add them to my business, there are other people who are afraid of God, the honest and pious ones.
Mustapha: What sort of assistance do you need?
Fatou Jobe: Yes if I have a shop I will really appreciate that, and also my compound.I have already started it but cannot finish it, so if I see someone who is willing to help me and finish so that I can live there with my family so that no one will disturb you only you and your family.
Mustapha: What changes do you expect from the society to attain the dignity of the physically challenged?
Fatou Jobe: I think pity and mercy covers it all. Because if they have pity on us they will hold us like their relatives. If you pity someone there are things that you will not do to him/her. There are others who should reason and know that God decides and does whatever he likes. “You can be able bodied but you can reach some stage and you become disabled, that only god knows. The people should take their time, anything that they want to do to the disable they have to reason before they do it. God see’s and knows anything that is going on, so let them be careful of what they are doing. Thanks, that’s what I got to say.
Mustapha: Some in society think that persons with disabilities should be regarded as second class citizens who should be beggars, what is your view on this?
Fatou Jobe: Those are one of the times which I face difficulties in my business but apart from that the business goes normal and everything runs smoothly. I will not beg as long as my business runs smoothly.
Mustapha: How about your health?
Fatou Jobe: Thank god it’s fine but it will be good if the government provides hospital for the disable people because “When I go to the hospital from treatment it used to be very hard for me, because I sit at the queue for hours”. I’m appealing to the government to build hospital for we the disable persons. And the medicine should atleast be cheaper for us because we are not financially strong, we just try our level best that also affects us a lot.
Mustapha: What difficulties do you face in your business?
Fatou Jobe: I face little difficulties sometimes in my business. I used to gather the little money I have to go to the market and buy goods but on the way to the market is where I face most of the difficulties. Because I used to push myself from Tallinding Sicap down to Serrekunda, that’s not an easy thing to do. And if I need to do the shopping, to buy the commodities, I met some of the prices have increased so the money that I take along that’s why I use it and then return home. And sometimes I even return to the market to buy the one’s that have not been bought, and place them on my table. Some days for the whole day I sell nothing and I have to feed the family. I used to take debts from one of my friends.
Some people remember God and they take us as one and when they see us they praise, greet us and laugh with us like one family and we are one family for sure. But there are others who think that we are not among human beings those are the one’s who are disable and deemed us too low. Those are disable because their brains are reduced to nothing and think that we are not part of the people. Disability does not mean he/she doesn’t have brain, we are like anyone else. Once a person is reasoning correctly just because he is handicapped you should not count him out of people. I consider such persons as the real disables because of their mentality.
